Traffic & transportation

Transportation caused the death of distance. With the sky to earth difference between the exponentially increasing motorized vehicles and the inadequate road infrastructure is now of serious concern across the Globe. The volume of data handled by the road infrastructure related departments at state and national level is unbelievable.

It becomes more appropriate to have a system that can handle all the data in a methodical and efficient way to analyze and take decisions quickly for planning and monitoring roads. The solution is a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) which have been widely used in the field of transportation as location information is critical for transportation planning, management and decision making. GIS offers comprehensive solution for the above requirement where location data of roads and related infrastructure can be shown on GIS map with data on these features retrieved and analyzed to help decision-makers in planning, monitoring and maintaining of roads and related assets in a better way. A Web enabled GIS system not only takes the decision support system to the next level by providing secure access to information over the world wide web, but also allows for timely and accurate decisions related to planning, monitoring, and maintaining of roads and related assets anytime, anywhere.

PIXEL has been in the forefront of providing latest & state of the art Geospatially enabled Road Sector solution – the Road Information & Management System [RIMS], with its ISO 9001-2000 certified solution development center & technology savvy dedicated teams. Our RIMS, on both desktop and enterprise, creates enormous value-add on to existing third party geospatial COTS software without changes to already existing legacy systems. PIXEL’s Enterprise Road Information & Management System (RIMS) is consolidated, interrelated and analytical information on the highway component characteristics, based on continuously updated data, readily available at the users end. Information would include all highway components like geographical location, assets, traffic, pavement, bridges, accidents, operating level of service and costs, environment, etc.

PIXEL’s WebGIS based ROAD INFORMATION SYSTEM

A working GIS integrates these five key components:

Spatial and Aspatial Data: Data required for the GIS (Spatial and non-spatial or Aspatial)
Hardware: Set of supporting hardware required for the GIS
Software: Set of supporting software required to run the GIS
Human Capital: People/ Personnel working on the GIS or users of GIS
Procedures: Workflows/Methods for the GIS

The following broad categories of activities/ datasets are worked upon for a complete solution for the Transportation Sector:

1. Base map creation with detailed road network from Transportation Departmental maps.
2. Base map and road network updating from high resolution satellite imagery (0.5 m resolution.
3. Spatial & Non-Spatial data to include but not limited to:

Various types of road categories and other transport network.
Road Name and Number, starting and ending with details as specified by/for department roads.
Shoulder width and surface type along the length of road.
Side drainage and its type along the road.
Cross Drainage (CD) structures- Culverts, Bridges, their location, name of stream/ river, vents – size, numbers and type, Linear Water Way, width of carriageway & footpath, overall width, type of sub-structure, type of superstructure, condition of the CD, date of inspection etc.
Digital Terrain/ Elevation/ Contour Data (90m interval).
Utility data (for selected corridors/stretches) with data from respective state/central departments.
Wayside / Roadside facilities.
Land use/ Land cover data.
The Right-of-Way [ROW] details.
Railway crossing - location and type.
CBR (California Bearing Ration) values of the sub-grade soil of the roads.
Pavement Roughness (IRI - m/km) measured by Vehicle Mounted Bump Integrator.
Pavement Condition data such as cracking, potholes, rutting, raveling, edge-break and drainage.
Traffic details collected from Traffic Survey done at Traffic Count Posts.
Road accident data.
Environmental data such as rainfall, climatic zones etc.
Location of historically important places, tourist spots, industrial growth centers, wild life sanctuaries, national parks, airports and other places of interest.

Our ROBUST Web based RIS provides:

Web GIS based map of roads and related information.
Customized Tools to query on type of roads - by surface type, classification, pavement condition, traffic density, carriageway width etc., and roads by finance schemes and such many decision making tools.
Strategic Options Study to prioritize the road network for taking up improvement of roads.
Entire road network can be analyzed for various parameters using the RIS while considering large projects.
For maintenance by analyzing the network for the surface distress condition.
Macro level decision making for route planning, prioritization of road network for improvement.
Near real time project monitoring on status, progress with video/ clippings of project stretches/ site(s), when linked to data on project status as collected from the field.
Road surface condition video/ clipping over the web.
Digital Terrain Data for macro level route planning.
3D visualization of road on web.
Route planning between a given source and destination.
Integrated utility, land use/land cover and land holding data beyond right of way for planning on land acquisition, shifting of utilities etc.
& many more…
